It is law to provide adequate and appropriate first aid equipment, facilities and trained personnel at your Mosque.
What is seen to be adequate depends on the size of your organisation. You are required to carry out an assessment of your first aid requirements. This will involve:
- Identifying hazards and risks.
- Calculating the size of your organisation.
- Finding out what first aid equipment and facilities are required by law.
- How many personnel will require first aid training and to what level.
Record Keeping
You are required by law to keep an accident book to record all work-related injuries. This can be used to identify accident trends and areas for improvement in health and safety.
First Aid Equipment
The minimum equipment requirement is a suitably stocked first aid box that is clearly visible and easily accessible. It is suggested that a first aid box should at least contain scissors, bandages, antiseptic wipes to clean wounds, safety pins, sterile plasters that are individually wrapped, disposable gloves, and adhesive tape. Expiry dates should be checked regularly. Anything past expiry should be disposed of and replaced. You should also keep a leaflet in your first aid box containing general first aid advice. It is advisable to not store tablets or medicines in your first aid box. The first aid box should contain equipment to meet the needs of your first aid assessment.
If you do not have easy access to mains tap water you should keep at least 1 litre of sterile water in sealed disposable containers. It is recommended to do this in case of unforeseen water shortage or temporary water disconnection.
First Aid Training
First Aid training courses you can complete include:
- Emergency First aid at Work – For low hazard environments and where Health and Safety guidelines recommend your organisation requires an emergency first aid at work certificate. Most Mosques or Madrassahs will require this.
- First Aid at Work – For high hazard environments or organisations needing additional first aid training possibly to cover employees with existing medical conditions or disabilities. For example, if members of your Mosque congregation or Madrassah registered pupils have severe allergies or conditions such as epilepsy.
- First aid for appointed persons – For low hazard environments or where your needs assessment indicates you don’t require a first aider.
- First aid annual skills update – For existing first aiders to refresh their training from the First Aid at Work course.
- Paediatric first aid – For when babies or children are left in your care. Necessary for Islamic schools or Mosques that do Madrassah classes.
- Defibrillator courses – For when you don’t have a first aid certificate. Teaches the use of an Automated External Defibrillator, basic life support and CPR.
