If you are a trustee of a Mosque, Madrassah or Islamic school in the UK which has one employee or more, you are required by law to have employer’s liability cover.
One of the main types of business insurance, employer’s liability cover is designed to protect you against claims made for compensation by an employee of the Mosque for an injury sustained while working on the premises. This type of policy can also insure you for compensation claims made by volunteers, temporary workers, contractors and ex-employees. Under the Employers’ Liability (Compulsory Insurance) Act 1969, you must have a minimum cover level of £5 million or else face a possible fine of up to £2,500 per day. Apart from the legal consequences, without the right type of insurance in place, any successful claims for compensation by an employee will have to be met by the Mosque, Madrassah or Islamic school.
Who Does It Cover?
Employer’s Liability Cover exists for the purpose of insuring against a range of compensation claims, such as for lost earnings by an employee injured while at the Mosque, for instance, or for the cost of medical care claimed by a volunteer hurt in a fall while working at the Madrassah. If you are hiring contractors and he or she is employed on a labour-only basis and is working under your direction and using tools, equipment or material owned by the Mosque, you are required to have employer’s liability cover.
