Anything can happen, which is why Mosque insurance is essential. It’s important to have the right level of coverage, ensuring that the full cost of replacing your contents is covered.
What is Contents Insurance?
Contents insurance covers the items within the Mosque rather than the structure of the building. This will typically include:
- Tables & chairs as well as other furniture (bookcases, cabinets etc)
- Minbar (Pulpit)
- Madrassah Benches
- Books (including copies of the Qur'an) which aren't for sale
- Hats & Prayer Beads
It is important to note that Computers and other electronic items (such as TVs, printers, projectors, smart boards and so forth) are usually insured separately to contents.
Do you need to insure the Mosque Contents?
As with buildings, it is not a legal requirement to insure the contents of the Mosque, however it may be prudent to do so to protect against the worst case scenarios.
Most contents are generally low in monetary value but Mosques will tend to have them in larger numbers.
You should ask yourself; can you purchase ALL the contents in the Mosque today? If the answer is no or you’re unsure, having Contents Insurance will give you peace of mind and ensure the Mosque and community are protected if the worst was to happen.
Example 1
Chairs can be purchased for approximately £50 each but if you need to replace 20 chairs, that is £1000! Most larger Mosques will have considerably more than 20 chairs, same too for tables.
Example 2
Madrassah benches typically retail for £10 each, but if you need to purchase 200 benches, that’s £2000!
Example 3
Live streaming cameras tend to start around the £2500 region. Once you add in the laptop, mic and other associated items, you could be nearing £5000!
How much are the Mosque Contents worth?
With the buildings, you can instruct chartered surveyors to carry out a survey and place a value on the rebuild cost of a property. Unfortunately, this isn’t possible for the Contents within the Mosque.
So the question is, how do you value your contents and ensure you are not underinsured?
The answer, put simply, is for you to carry out a survey yourself; moving from room to room listing all the contents in each room. Then you can cross reference against invoices from when you purchased the items or look online to see how much the items are on sale for.
There are a few key points to keep in mind:
- You need to insure ALL your contents and not just some of them, otherwise you run the risk of being underinsured
- You will need to value the items at the price they are currently selling for rather than your original purchase price (as they may be more expensive now)
- Remember to keep your list updated regularly (and in turn, your insurer as well) especially after large purchases
Ensure Your Mosque Is Correctly Valued
If you don’t have the right level of coverage, it could lead to a reduced claim payout or a claim be repudiated and worse still, your policy being invalidated.
